Thoughts on loneliness or lack there of.

I admit that I do miss my friends and family and somehow even though back home I would easily go longer than this between visiting them, it seems longer now because I know I can't just hop in the car and see them within the hour.

Wonderfully though, I have not felt 'lonely' since I've been here.  I attribute this to a few things.  One possible reason is that I can hear the family in the next room over quite frequently, because there is a door between our kitchens.  Sure the door is shut but it doesn't do much to block the sound.  Another reason is that this Military base supports over $28,000 personnel, and is only about 1.25 miles across, so there are always other people around.  They don't all live here on base, but at any given moment during the day there are probably 15,000 - 20,000 people on base.  And finally, even when I step out in town, it is pretty impossible to feel lonely in a city with 6,858 people per square mile, which is 4,034 more people per sq mile than my home town.

I recently learned that the country of Japan has a population equal to 1/2 of the United States population.  However, the area of Japan is a little smaller than the area of the State of California and then to top it off, only 20 % of the country is populated, so basically it would be like taking half the people in the United States and putting them all into Rhode Island... lol!

Just for fun I've added some links to some videos on YouTube that I found demonstrating how crowded some places in Tokyo are.

Remember though, these videos are from Tokyo, and not where I am, so if you are supposed to come here on Orders, or want to come here to visit, don't be afraid that it's like that everywhere, cause it's not.  These are extreme examples.

  1. HOLY COW!!! Seriously, I would not get in the wave pool OR the train...I have claustrophobic issues and dont like ppl being in my bubble unless I invite them into it!!!

  2. As for the streets, that could possibly be why they actually have a time for pedestrians to cross, other wise I don't believe any cars would get a chance to cross the street LOL...

  3. Yeah, you could not possibly pay me to get into that wave pool. I hear that it's not always that bad, and the trains are only like that in Tokyo during 'rush hour' which is from about 7am - 8am and then again from about 6pm -8pm. I've ridden the train here during the evening rush, and it's nothing like that. Sure, the train was full and a few people had to stand, but there was still plenty of room to not feel suffocated. And yes, as for the streets, at main pedestrian intersections pretty much anywhere in Japan, they will stop traffic in all directions and the people get an alloted amount of time to cross. The ones close to here are about 30 seconds or so, while the one in the video is 60 seconds.
